Script: بسمالله الرحمن الرحیم Do you think that only believers have problems in life? Do you think that only those who believe in God and want to adhere to His religion experience pain and hardship? And that wars only affect those who are religious and those who believe? No, I think if you look at history, you’ll see that wars, specifically the world wars, calamities, troubles, floods, earthquakes, storms, tsunamis, .. none of these are inflicted exclusively on religious people. But what Satan is always seeking to do, is to convince us that our troubles are the result of believing in God, whereas the Holy Quran talks about this repeatedly – for example in the story of Moses and elsewhere when addressing the Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH) – that grief and troubles are for everyone. The grief and troubles experienced by the one who believes in God, regardless of whether they are caused by others or are the result of their own doing, God renders them as trials for their own growth. Non-believers, on the other hand, remain entangled in the consequences of their own actions. God does not intend to govern this world in such a way that believers face no problems and experience no grief. This would render our freedom of choice and accountability meaningless, because everyone would know for sure beforehand the immediate consequence of their deeds. No. Amongst both the believers and the non-believers there are some who have problems and some who apparently do not. In verse 156 of sura Baqara, when God says we will test you with fear, hunger, problems for your wealth and assets, and danger for your lives, He stresses that all the time, He is the One testing you in these situations, in order to reward your patience. Not that He makes them come about, but when they do occur, those who say إنّا لله و إنّا إلیه راجعون - we belong to God (not we are from God) and to Him we return – those are the ones whom God blesses, and they are the guided ones. When we visit Imam Hossein(as)’s shrine, we are told to walk into the sanctuary of his tomb and say السلام علیک یا ابا عبدالله، إنّا لله و إنّا إلیه راجعون، ما أعظم مصیبتک عند جدک رسول الله(ص). God’s blessings be upon you, we belong to God and to Him is our return. How profound is your grandfather’s grief for you (meaning the Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH)). How would we feel if we did not experience any grief or troubles, while God’s most beloved and dearest ones endure the most severe sufferings and afflictions? |
