بسمالله الرحمن الرحیم God has given us a very simple instruction in the Holy Quran, but we seem to overlook it and neglect its benefit. First, let’s keep in mind that God does not need us. But in verse 3 of sura Fāṯir, like several other instances in the Quran, he calls on us to remember his blessings. There He says “O mankind, remember the favor of Allah upon you!” اذْكُرُوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ Remember the blessings He has bestowed upon you. Remember, remember, remember. When a child is told of what his parents have done for them, they become calm, they become polite, they feel safe. Then God says, “Is there any creator other than Allah Who provides your sustenance out of the heaven and the earth?” هَلْ مِنْ خَالِقٍ غَيْرُ اللَّهِ يَرْزُقُكُم مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ You have no idea how God provides your sustenance. Is there anyone else who can? If there is, then go to them! God asks this question in several places in the Quran. Before this verse, in verse 2, God says “Whatever mercy Allah unfolds for the people, no one can hold it back …” ما یَفتَح اللّهُ لِلنّاسِ مِن رَحمَهٍ فَلا مُمسِکَ لَها If God wants something for someone, a blessing, no one can prevent it. Why does such a clear and simple matter have no place in our lives? Why do we fail to pay attention to it? Why do we not count God’s blessings? Why do we not recall them for each other? اذکروا All of you remember (and remind each other). Of course, when I sit and think about all the things missing from my life, and others’ lives for that matter, and then spread these as news, obviously people will feel insecure. Interestingly, Amir al-Mo’meneen(a) teaches us six verses of the Quran and says whoever recites these each morning, God will suffice him from any evil, trouble or harm that may come their way. One of these six verses is actually verse 2 of sura Fatir which we recited. God says remember My blessings, and then He asks whether there is anyone else capable of providing you with your sustenance. He says all this to me, and then the Patron He designated for me tells me what to do in order to fend off all harm and problems in life. I have all this, but I fail to remember and to benefit from them. |
