Sometimes people hear myths about jinn and Shayatin (the devilish jinn), and then they seem to start questioning God. They might say, “O God, the blows that people experience in their lives, why is it that they don’t know where they’re coming from. We cannot see these jinn and shayatin, and they seem to be plotting against us, other people seem to be casting spells on us. They apparently know how to impede our luck and fortune.”
These types of thoughts are themselves induced by Shaytan. Are jinn and shayatin the only ones at work? Have Muslims and believers not had enemies throughout history? How about today?
Aren’t the powers that be constantly at work to control their lives, countries? They even try to control what they eat andwhat they think about? They are turning the world upside down, either explicitly, or implicitly, this is basically what both human and jinn shayatin plan to do. So why do we behave so distrustfully with God, as if we are being threatened and harmed from sources which we can do nothing against. This is not true.
Verses 99 and 100 of surat an-Nahl say that the Shaytan that we consider to be so prominent, Surely he has no authority over those who believe and put their trust in their Lord. إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَهُ سُلْطَانٌ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا.
God is saying, why don’t you come to me? Why don’t you trust me? Come. Shaytan has no power or influence over you. Shaytan has no control over the one who seeks refuge with God, and believes in, and relies on, God. عَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
His command is, rather, over those “who take him as a patron” عَلَى الَّذِينَ يَتَوَلَّوْنَهُ, those who believe he is capable of doing something, and those who set up partners to God. As soon as someone thinks the world is being controlled by Shaytan and by those who know sorcery, that is when they are actually relinquishing the control of their affairs to them. How could the world possibly be out of God’s control?
Once, in the presence of a great scholar, someone kept insisting that somebody had cast a spell on him. But the scholar refused to accept his claims. Finally, he dropped his head and said: “Is Imam az-Zaman(a) capable of nullifying sorcery and spells or not?” That person was embarrassed.
Shaytan can do no harm to the one who relies on God. Belief and reliance are key.
