بسم‌الله الرحمن الرحیم
Verse 9 of surat Al-Kahf is the ayah recited by Imam Hossein (AS)’s   decapitated head on the spearhead:
أَمْ   حَسِبْتَ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْكَهْفِ وَالرَّقِيمِ كَانُوا مِنْ آيَاتِنَا   عَجَبًا .
“Do you   suppose that the companions of the Cave and al-Raqim (the Inscription) were wondrous [signs] among Our signs?”
This verse is full   of remarkable points, but here we want to focus on one of them.
The ayah is telling us, do you think the story of the companions of   the cave and the inscription were something exceptional and unrepeatable? No,   there is no such thing as exceptional and unrepeatable as far as God is   concerned. What difference does it make for God? For Him, ‘the ordinary’ and   ‘the extraordinary’ are the same.
Now God explains to me. He says that these were people who took   refuge in the cave (a particular cave). Why? Because they had had enough.   They were surrounded by idolatry, senseless talk and ridicule of religion and   faith. This becomes clear in the following verses: و إذ اعتَزَلتُموهُم و ما یَعبُدونَ مِن دون الله.
“You left them and what they were   worshipping besides God.”
You gradually   distanced yourselves from them. You wanted to worship God. God told you to   take refuge in the cave فَاووا إلی الکَهفِ.
So they take refuge in the cave and plead: ‘Our Lord, grant us Grace   from Your presence and provide us with direction in our affair.’
Do not think that this is exceptional. No, these events will repeat   themselves.
The reality of the cave in Creation is the Imam. Now let’s see where   it is that we become calm. Where is our “place”? Some people lead such a life   that hell becomes their place to stay in. But for some, their place is   heaven.
Everyone should look within their own hearts, and see where they feel   they can have calm and peace. That place is their sanctuary. Is it near Imam   Reza(a)? By Amir al-Mo’meneen(a)? Is your haven Imam Hossein(a)? Imam az-Zaman(a)?   Imam Hossein’s companions became his companions because their refuge was Imam   Hossein(a). So the ayah is not strange after all.
Imam Hossein(a) is sending out the message that   we can all be like this.
