When the situation becomes difficult for a believer, what should they do? Put aside their belief? Who is the One they believe in? Is it not God? A God that holds power over His people. You expect a believer to abandon God because of some hardship or ridicule?
In some instances in the Holy Quran, God recounts how believers are ridiculed and persecuted merely for their faith and belief, with no other  justifiable reason, because they have done no harm to anyone. No, only because of their faith.
One of the stupefying ayahs of the Holy Quran is verse 82 of Sūrat Al-Aʿrāf. It informs of a group and society that are caught up in a collective antagonism towards another group. Towards whom? Towards those who want to remain pure. Towards Prophet Lut and his followers.
These people, who were actually Lut’s fellow countrymen, would protest, saying “they (Lut and his followers) are indeed a people who [want to] keep themselves clean [of corruption and depravity]”. They had earlier said, “exile them from your town.”
Hard to believe that someone can be ostracized simply because they want to remain uncorrupted. But when you think of it, you’ll see that it is actually possible. Indeed, this seems to be the case in today’s world.
A corrupt person, a person without belief, is anxious and concerned, and they are bound to be agitated by seeing people who are honest and upright, people who strive to remain untainted. Because these people are signs for them, and admonish them and activate their reason.
One can get to a point where he or she would want to get others corrupted so that they become like themselves. Let’s get them muddled up in sin so that we would all be the same.
At this point, the Quran urges the believer to be patient. Being ridiculed for wanting to be good has no logical reason. So be patient. The following verse says, “So, We rescued him and his people, … except for his wife.” Normally, one’s spouse would have a special place amongst those with whom one is affiliated. But the Quran says no, it’s no use being a prophet’s wife if you’re not a real companion, and if you do not want to remain pure.
Let’s hope God strengthens our hearts to remain pure, even if we are ridiculed.
