script : بسمالله الرحمن الرحیم Verse 52 of Sūrat Hūd says: “Seek forgiveness from your Lord.” Asking for forgiveness has been mentioned in the Quran repeatedly. Amazingly, who is the one telling us to ask for forgiveness? The very One whom we have disobeyed Anywhere in this world, if someone has placed a law or forbidden something, they do not tell those who have broken the law or committed the forbidden act to come and ask to be forgiven. This is exclusive to God. And yet, the picture depicted by some of God! What can I say? سبحان الله. The only one who is a forgiver in this world and creation, is Him, and His chosen ones who have been nurtured by Him. So much encouragement in the Quran for us to ask for forgiveness. Would God say something that was pointless? No, سبحان الله he is exalted from any pointless act. God would never mock us. If He did not want to forgive, why would He urge us to seek His forgiveness? We have a verse similar to this in another sura, Nuh, verse 10, says: “Seek forgiveness from your Lord; for indeed He was Forgiving.” This means God was forgiving long before you sought His forgiveness. We should not expect God to forgive our sins without our asking for forgiveness. That would make us more and more presumptuous and rude. Regret, asking for forgiveness, compensating my wrongdoing, reforming, all these take me forward, closer to Him. And God has opened this path, and encourages us to take it. When God so repeatedly advises us to ask for forgiveness, one becomes sure that maybe Satan doesn’t want us to do so and is always trying to stop us from doing so. Satan wants us to lose hope and despair from being forgiven, and to make up fake excuses for our sins, to keep us away from seeking forgiveness. And it is so strange. In this same verse, God tells us, through His messenger: “Seek forgiveness from your Lord … then repent to Him, … so that He may send down rain from heaven for you in torrents and add strength to your own strength.” His blessings will pour on you. It’s truly amazing. He forgives, He is kind, and He adds to His blessings. Now in all honesty, is this the God we believed in up until now? |
