script : بسمالله الرحمن الرحیم One of the holy Quran’s amazing stories is that of Yūsuf (AS). Almost a whole sura is dedicated to Yūsuf’s remarkable story. Verse 87 of this sura of the Quran tells of Yaʿqūb urging Yūsuf‘s brothers to search for Yūsuf and to find him. It’s extraordinary. The thing is, from the very beginning, Yūsuf‘s brothers did all they could to banish Yūsuf from Ya’qub’s sight, and whenever their father, Yaʿqūb would tell them to go look for Yūsuf, they would go and come back and say they looked everywhere but he was not to be found. They had actually seen Yūsuf the last time they went to MISR, but they couldn’t recognize him, due to their jealousy and the fact that deep inside, they did not want to find him. But this time Yaʿqūb says: يَا بَنِيَّ اذْهَبُوا فَتَحَسَّسُوا مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ. “O my sons! ‘Go and seek Yūsuf and his brother.” The word تحسس refers to a search where you really want to find what is lost, you try to feel and sense it. Yaʿqūb continues: وَلَا تَيْأَسُوا مِن رَّوْحِ اللَّه. “Do not despair of Allah’s Grace.” Why are you so pessimistic about God’s mercy? This time, go with the belief that God will show you a way out, a way out of the difficult situation you are in, a way out of your misery. Yaʿqūb told them to go, make a move, and to seek Yūsuf wholeheartedly. Not with indifference, but with the honest intention to find him. Maybe this is how we behave with God in our lives. When we ask for something, especially something ethical or spiritual, we seem to ask for it half-heartedly, with very little confidence. In any case, the Quran challenges us: Why have you lost hope in God’s kindness and blessing? When we recite verse 87 of the sura Yūsuf, we get the feeling Yaʿqūb is worried that his sons might despair of God. That’s why he encourages them not to lose hope. Go and search for Yūsuf and remain optimistic about God’s mercy. And this time they did find Yūsuf. We’ve got to have hope in life. God does not let anyone down. |
