Why do we sometimes behave as though God is seeking to humiliate His people? Do you really think he is waiting for an opportunity to make them miserable? Of course not.
One of the first images depicted in the Holy Quran of God’s creation in this world is the story of Adam. God tells Adam and Eve, “the heaven We have created for you is rid of any distress or anxiety. Go and live there, and eat whatever and however much you desire. But do not approach this tree.”
But Satan tempts him, and swears that “this tree is in fact the elixir of life and if you eat from it, you will become immortal.”
You can see in narrations that this tree is exclusive to Ahl-ul-Bayt (as). You see, not all that God has forbidden is necessarily filthy or impure. No, God’s don’ts in fact outline his sacred boundaries. God is telling Adam that this is not your place, stay away.
So Adam and Eve approached that tree, and suddenly everything fell apart. Ugliness prevailed. And Adam became bewildered and regretful. He is now anxious. Which ever way he goes, he finds no way out. All doors are shut.
Then what happens? God turns toward him, Sura Al-Baqara, verse 37: فتاب عليه, because God is the One who comes back to his people. God wants to forgive Adam.
At this point, God reveals certain “words” to him as the keys to His forgiveness. Adam is taught the names of the “holy five”, the Prophet, his daughter Fatima, his son-in-law Ali, and his two grandsons, Hassan and Hossein (peace be upon them all). And by their names, Adam pleads to God, the Relenting and Compassionate God.
“Adam, where we told you not to enter, now, we want to accept your repentance by the very names of those solely for whom that place was intended. We could have accepted your repentance even if you hadn’t invoked those names, but We wanted you to be aware of their pre-eminent status in Creation, as well as your own position with regard to theirs.”
Yes, these holy five are the key to gaining God’s mercy.
And yes, God is indeed very kind.
Not only is He not looking for a chance to belittle His people, but rather,
He is always looking for an excuse to forgive.
